Saruoi Matsuri (Monkey chasing festival)
Hanasaku Hotaka Shrine is the main shrine of the Hotaka shrines that are located in several places in Tone-gun. The festival has a history of about 300 years and originated from an ancient myth; the god of Takeru-no-Mikoto defeated a large white-haired monkey which would come out of a cave on Mt. Hotaka, causing harm to the villagers. It is a traditional event held every year on the day of the monkey in mid-September of the lunar calendar. Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property [Country]
