Play in the Refreshing Breeze of the Plateau.
Marunuma Kogen area boasts two beautiful lakeside areas (Lake Suganuma and lake Marunuma) Viewing is good but the abundant nature of Katashina is best enjoyed through hands-on experiences! Going out on the lake on a canoe or a SUP board will let you immerse yourself in the breathtaking and vast natural scenery. There are also other activities which offer a first-hand experience in nature. The adjoining activity areas on the camping grounds in the village offer a variety of fun hands-on experiences such as workshops and BBQs.
Lake Suganuma boasts the clearest water in Japan.
Suganuma works as a barrier to block lava flow from Mt. Nikko Shirane. The mysterious lake surrounded by the virgin forest boasts some of the clearest water in Japan. The water will appear in shades ranging from emerald green to indigo as the depth increases. You can enjoy the vivid contract of the water surface and the surrounding trees. The autumn leaves by the lake also offer eye-catching scenery of the season.
‘Nikko Shirane’ -Experience active mountain climbing
Mt. Nikko-Shirane (2,578m) is Japan's highest mountain in the north of the Kanto region. The mountain summit proudly offers a landscape of beautiful lakes such as Goshikinuma, Midaga-ike Lake, Suganuma, Marunuma, and the surrounding mountains. Taking a ropeway all the way to ‘Mt. Nikko-Shirane Rock Garden’ at the 2,000-meter-high point will let you immerse yourself in a lot of beautiful nature with alpine plants including Shiraneaoi or palmatum, known as the queen of wild grasses and flowers. Another popular spot is ‘Tenku no Ashiyu’ (foot bath in the sky). It gives you a Panoramic view!
