History
This area is called Tsuchiide, which also appears in a legend: In ancient times when the Heike was enjoying its golden days, Prince Takakura Mochihito ordered the Minamoto clan headquartered in the eastern provinces to conquer the Taira clan as they were acting too tyrannical. However, history says that the prince was killed in the battle, while another story says that the prince fled to the Kanto region via Mt. Akagi and a valley of the Katashina River and reached Arai in Tsuchiide. It is said that the prince died here as he was bitten by a pit viper. There is a Mumyo Hoto pagoda built nearby to commemorate this historic event.
